1-On-One

Rajaa Alsanea
(Girls of Riyadh)
confesses an attachment to Disney comic books ...

In this month's 1-On-One!

Is it possible to be a good writer without being a good reader?

I do not think so. You can be a good reader but not a good writer, but it is hard to be the other way around. A writer needs to read between the lines, capture meanings that a random reader would not notice, and think about different levels of narration, depth of characters, and more specific details that lead to a successful piece of literature. For instance, I consider myself a good drama critic; however, I can not be a good drama director. Perhaps I can write drama one day for TV or cinema, but I will not be the right person to create the final product even if I am a good viewer.

Have you ever belonged to a reading group?

Yes, when I was back in Saudi but it was a small group of friends. I like smaller reading groups.

What advice do you have for reading group members when it comes to selecting books for discussion?

I recommend selecting foreign books. Think about all the books that are released around the world every year and the amount of good literature and knowledge you are missing on if you only read books from your own country or culture.

What books are you reading now or do you plan to read?

Currently I am reading In Praise of the Stepmother by Mario Vargas Llosa. After that I am planning to read Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis.

If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only bring one book with you to read, what would it be and why?

Seven by Ghazi Algosaibi.

If you could have dinner with three writers (dead or alive) who would they be and why?

Ghazi Algosaibi from Saudi (checked!), Kahlid Hosseini (working on it), and Orhan Pamuk (not quite there yet).

Have you ever read anything you're too embarrassed to admit (except in this interview)?

Collectible Disney comic books (editions published before 1980), I used to read them when I was a child and from time to time I still do!

Favorite book when you were a child?

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.
