Discussible Choices : What Are You Reading?
December

Thanks so much for your emails and letters about what your group is discussing. We've had great fun reading them, and we hope you will, too. Please continue to tell us what your group is doing - email us with what your group is reading this month!

Congratulations to Lisa, who is a member of four reading groups, for winning the random drawing of the Discussible Book Choices Contest! Her four picks this month?

“The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards, and The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Next up for Lisa and her groups: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and Thunderstruck by Erik Larsen."

"We are a small group operating in rural Devon, England, and we have very eclectic tastes in literature; we comprise two retired teachers, one retired nursing sister and two retired secretaries. Here are some of the books that we have read and enjoyed:

  • Bel Canto by Ann Patchet
  • Empress Orchid by Anchee Min
  • Small Island by Andrea Levy
  • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossein
  • The No.1 Ladie's Detective Agency by Alexander Mcall-Smith
  • Vanishing Acts by Jodie Picoult (and several more!)
  • The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble
  • Brick Lane by Monica Ali
  • Sea Glass by Anita Shreve (and several more!)
  • Other People's Children by Joanna Trollope
  • I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith
  • Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
  • Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris

We also have had a couple of Poetry Reading sessions, where we all bring poems to read that we enjoy or wish to talk about. Being a small group we look forward to receiving a newsletter with suggestions for further choices and also to hearing what other groups have enjoyed.

"My group has recently read The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Ursula, Under by Ingrid Hill, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, Station Hospital Saigon: A Navy Nurse in Vietnam, 1963-1964 by Bobbi Hovis (Ms. Hovis came to speak with us), Gilead by Marilynne Robinson, and Queen of the Oddballs: And Other True Stories from a Life Unaccording to Plan by Hilary Carlip (Author TeleChat). In December, we will be discussing Leeway Cottage by Beth Gutcheon plus have our holiday celebration. For 2007, we have two months planned already -- Robert Hicks is calling us to discuss his book, The Widow of the South and Sena Jeter Naslund will discuss her latest title, Abundance, via speakerphone. I’d like to discuss the Man Booker Award winner, The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai, when my month comes up again. We are ten women who love to read and have fun. We would like to know what other book clubs are discussing."
