Congratulations to Debbie and the Sand Mountain Girls Book Club (or Dixie Chicks Reading Group!) from Boaz, Alabama for winning the random drawing of the
Discussible Book Choices Contest!

We enjoy getting emails from book club members and sharing their choices with everyone. Please email us with your group's discussible choices, and you may win a book-related prize for every member of your reading group. Please remember to include your group name, number of people in your group, and a mailing address to send the prizes.

“I'm Debbie. I'm 54 years old and live in Boaz, Alabama.  I meet every six weeks or so with seven other former high school girl friends to do a Book/Dinner.

“We are just on our 3rd book … but having a blast!!!  Our current book is The Same Sweet Girls by Cassandra King.  We're lovin' it, 'cause it is soooo us!!!!!  Southern girl friends have a bond that even the "hottest" hunk can't break!

“We also do a dinner together … with the host of the night preparing the food.  Sometimes it has a theme and sometimes not.  The two themes have been a "Ground Hog Book/Dinner" on Ground Hog's Day and the other was a "Mardi Gras" Book/Dinner with a small parade, kings cake, and loads of beads and even "hot" underwear for party favors :)

“We just think it's all a "HOOT" and we love it :).”

“Our Sturdy Shoes Book Group from Memphis, TN, has read some excellent books that I know other groups would love.  Here are just a few of my (our) favorites.

“The Myth of You and Me by Leah Stewart.  This book is about two friends that were inseparable through high school, and then had a huge fight.  One of them is now getting married and cannot imagine her wedding without her old friend, so the old estranged friend tries to find her.  It is an excellent book!  For some reason, none of us really expected it to be so great, but we all loved it.

“Travelling Mercies by Anne Lamott.  The Sturdy Shoes has very few rules, but one of them is no self-help books.  While this one does not fall into that category, it is about a woman's spiritual metamorphosis.  Everytime I suggested this book, it was not chosen by my group.  So for Christmas this year, I bought everyone a copy!  Turns out, they loved it!  One of our members said, "I can't wait to finish reading it so that I can start reading it again!"

“They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky by Benson and Alephonsian Deng, Benjamin Ajak.  This is the true story of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan.  At the ages of 5 to 7 years, these boys were run out of their homes because of the civil war in Sudan.  They wandered around Africa, going to Ethiopia and finally wound up in a refugee camp in Kenya.  This book is absolutely amazing!

“There are so many more good books that we've read, but this is all I have time for right now.

“I love your Reading Group Choices, and look forward to getting it.”

Barbara, Sturdy Shoes Book Club, Memphis, TN

“Sam Harris’ Letter to a Christian Nation was a great conversation starter at our book club.”

Bob, Book Club for People Who May Not Be Women, Anchorage, AK

“I'm in three book clubs.  Our current selections this month were The Devil in the White City, Amsterdam, and The Shadow of the Wind.”

Barbara, BBC, San Antonio, TX
