Discussible Choices: What Are You Reading?
October 2007

Congratulations to Marianne and The Literary Locusts of Lochmere from Cary, North Carolina, for winning the random drawing for this month's Discussible Book Choice!

We enjoy hearing from book club members and sharing their choices with everyone. Please let us know about your group's discussible choices – you may win a book-related prize for every member of your reading group!

“Over the summer, since we don't meet in June/July, we read --- drum roll please --- Atlas Shrugged! – over 1000 pages – yikes! Many had read it years ago, but we tackled it again. For September, we are reading Water for Elephants, and for October, we are still trying to decide what to read. Would enjoy reading Loving Frank as a selection, but we can't get that many copies from the library, and we try not to have to buy every book we read. I enjoy your emails. Thanks for all the tips, feedback and suggestions."

More Discussible Book Choices

“This month the Valencia Pointe Book Club is reading Loverboy by Victoria Redel. Next month we will be reading Being Mrs. Alcott by Nancy Geary. We are a new club and thus far, 25 people have signed on. We intend to divide the club into two or three groups, because 25 people would be too much for an enjoyable discussion."

Rhona, Valencia Pointe Book Club Boynton Beach, FL

“The West Babylon Literary Club at the West Babylon Public Library is reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova this month.  It is a change of pace for us, our group has never read about "Vampires" before.  I am already getting comments from club members that they are "looking over their shoulder" while reading this book."

Millie, West Babylon Literary Club, West Babylon, NY

"Lone Tree Readers has 12 members, and we meet once a month, except in the summer. We meet in our Library and have been organized for over 10 years.  Our choices for the upcoming months are:
One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus
We Are All Welcome Here by Elizabeth Berg
The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew by Ranya Idilby, Suzanne Oliver, Priscilla Warner
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Digging to America by Anne Tyler
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
Eventide by Kent Haruf
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Jackie, Lone Tree Readers, Central City, NE

"Our group meets at the Brentwood Community Center in Brentwood (the real one, not in Los Angeles). We are members of the Senior Citizen's group. Our book for September is My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. We haven't had our meeting yet, but we know it will be a lively discussion. Our group is interesting. We are all avid readers. Some of us like light reading, others mysteries etc., some have a more 'intellectual' approach, some read for the pleasure of reading. I joined, because I am a mystery fan and usually read other books only when they were recommended. We don't necessarily read many current books so they don't need to be purchased. The library always has a looong wait for current favorites. It has been a tremendous experience, I have read so many great books I would not have read. I am happy to have found your website as it gives me other ideas for books, for discussions and other information."

Jane, Brentwood Community Center Reading Group, Brentwood, CA

Saint Michaels Book Club is reading Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Says Patty, “Thank you for the web site. We often get on to check your list of books.”

Patty, Saint Michaels Book Club, Duluth, MN

"Our book club is reading Mockingbird by Charles Shields this month."

Bernadette, Food for Thought Book Discussion Group, Rochester, NY
