Discussible Choices: What Are You Reading?
February
2008

Congratulations to Lynn and The Lunch Bunch Book Club in Houston, Minnesota, for winning the random drawing for this month’s Discussible Book Choice!

We enjoy hearing from book club members who share with everyone the book choices that made for lively discussions.. Please let us know what about the book contributed to your great discussion – you may win a book-related prize for every member of your reading group!

Loving Frank by Nancy Horan was a book that our Lunch Bunch Book Club discussed that led from the topic of this book, his doomed relationship with Mamah Borthwick Cheney, to his life story and the many examples of the homes he built that survive today. A complicated man who lived every day to its fullest, Frank introduced the prairie style of architecture. Several members of our group have seen or read about the nearby Taliesin, where the murders of Mamah and seven others took place. Though it was burned to the ground, Wright rebuilt it in her memory, and he lies there today in the cemetery next to Mamah. A fascinating read that shows the little-known human side of this man who made such a mark on his times.

“Our reading group consists of an average attendance of ten men and women; we meet every Wednesday at noon at our local library. Everyone brings a paper bag lunch, and we talk about what we have all been reading. A funny coincidence about us that we discovered, is that all our spouses or significant others (except for one!), don't read very much and can't understand why we always have a book to hand!”

Lynn, The Lunch Bunch Book Club, Houston, MN

More Discussible Book Choices

We are reading March by Geraldine Brooks. This may seem an odd choice in this time of conflict in Iraq to read about a war which was really not so long ago. It does remind us that we, and much of the world, have been in wars often and we still struggle for peace.

JoAnne, The Literary Ladies, North Platte, NE

This month we read Piece of Work by Laura Zigman. It is the story of a stay-at-home mother who has to go back to work (to a terrible job), because her husband was fired. There were so many issues that we could relate to! As an extra treat, we had an author chat with Ms. Zigman. She was so much fun to talk with.

Julie, The Preschool Moms Book Club, Mechanicsburg, PA

The Pierce County Book Club chooses their books on a quarterly basis. For Q1 2008, the discussible choices are Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund; The Wedding Officer by Anthony Cappella (including an Italian-themed banquet); and The Pirate’s Daughter by Margaret Cezair-Thompson. Incidently, all of these choices were made from Reading Group Choices 2008!)

Cynthia, The Pierce County Book Club, Puyallup, WA

We are reading BLINK this month.

Janice, Same Sisters, Erie, PA

This month we read Truman by David McCullough, and next month we are reading 3 Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson

Jennifer, The Morse Evening Book Group, Natick, MA

We enjoyed One Thousand Splendid Suns in January.

Susan, 38th Street Diva Readers, Myrtle Beach, SC

We had a good discussion with The Ghost at the Table.

Fran, The Alyson Pond Book Club, Raleigh, NC
