Congratulations to Laura and The Morsels of the Mind Reading Group and to Janet and The Bayberry Bocce Girls for winning the random drawings for this month’s Discussible Book Choices!

We enjoy hearing from book club members who share with everyone the book choices that made for lively discussions.. Please let us know what about the book contributed to your great discussion – you may win a book-related prize for every member of your reading group!

“We have been discussing books for 17 years now - and have read (and discussed) over 170 titles! We have had many favorites, but one of the most recent titles was The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. The drama of a serial killer, at the turn of the century amidst the Great World Fair in Chicago really intrigued all of us! We also loved The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant, and discussed this book in - yes a real red tent, complete with straw. The Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay was another group favorite, and we all enjoyed Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides more than we thought we would. We don’t always agree on what we like and aren't afraid to give our opinions. Anyway - thanks for the suggestions!”

Laura, Morsels of the Mind, Belmont, MI

“I registered today after a friend told me about your website.  Our Book Club mainly reads books that help us better understand issues regarding, race, women’s issues, world affairs and how they affect women.

“During the past year we read Journey Across the Four Seas by Veronica Li, our first book related to the experience of a Chinese woman born in Hong Kong in the 30’s, who survived wars and revolutions to successfully raise five children. Our members enjoyed her story of the power of women and culture in traditional Chinese society. I recommend it as a good read and a window into a world that in many ways is still representative of Chinese society.”

Janet, Bayberry Bocce Girls, Arnold, MD

“Our group read Sena Jeter Naslund's Abundance about Marie Antoinette — the discussion went on for 4 hours! There was debate about Naslund's writing style. Marie Antoinette herself (I had picked up books about her Versailles the Revolution etc. at the library and had them scattered about) — the range of emotions we had regarding her — ranging from pity to annoyance. It was an excellent discussion.”

Cynthia, Pierce County Book Club, Puyallup, WA

“We are reading Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and are totally blown away by it.  The book reads like a novel, except that it is true, written by a true hero. We also read Eat Pray Love and had mixed reactions.  What a compare/contrast the two books are!”

Maureen, Loggers' Run Faculty Book Club, Boca Raton, FL

“Our Book Club Chicks With Books read Water for Elephants, and every member truly rated it a 10 (out of 10). It was an easy read and very intriguing, as it related many different aspects of aging and life in the Circus — a must read!!”

Trish, Chicks With Books, Chase, British Columbia, Canada

“We have found Web-Thinking by Dr. Linda Seger to be exceptional in our personal development, as well as our perspectives for living in a cooperative field for business.”

Maria, EarthWisdom, San Marcos, CA

“Great books:  Water for Elephants (Gruen); Christopher Moore books; Gentlemen & Players (Joanne Harris); I, Mona Lisa (Kalogridis); Blindness (Saramago); Phillipa Gregory books; and Eat Pray Love (Gilbert).”

Peggy, Granada Hills Book Group, Granada Hills, CA

“This month we are discussing Tawni O'Dell's Coal Run.  It's a great slice of life from a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania.  Lovely characters make it a worthwhile read.”

Kathy, Seekonk Book Discussion Group, Seekonk, MA

“This month, we read The Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle. This book deals with the illegal immigrant issue in California, so it was a great discussion book.”

Julie, Preschool Moms Book Club, Mechanicsburg, PA

“Here are several titles we have read that were discussible: Labyrinth by Kate Mosse; Deafening by Frances Itani; and The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls.”

Liz, North Tampa Library Book Discussion Group, Tampa, FL

“We just read The Widow's War — a stirring account of a widow's fight to remain independent in New England a whaling community.”

Marty, Georgetown Woods Book Club, Youngsville, NC

“Love to read about new books and "OLDIES"!!”

Dot, Pinehurst Reading Group, Pinehurst, NC
