Discussible Choices: What Are You Reading?

Congratulations to Rebecca and The Literary Salon of Note for winning the random drawing for this month’s Discussible Book Choice!

We enjoy hearing from book club members who share with everyone the book choices that made for lively discussions.. Please let us know what about the book contributed to your great discussion – you may win a book-related prize for every member of your reading group!

The Literary Salon of Note is one of many groups whose discussions came alive when the authors joined their gathering.  Says Rebecca:

“Our group thoroughly enjoyed reading History Lesson for Girls by Aurelie Sheehan. A compellingly told coming-of-age story set in Connecticut in the 1970s, this novel is powerfully evocative of both time and place and contains characters you won't soon forget. Everyone in our group was caught up in the tale which covers the collision of multiple lines of history. Our discussion was one of our most lively yet ranging from the remembered poignancy and pains of adolescence to the free love and drug scene of the 70s to parenting and how our perspective on this role changes over time both historically and personally. If you're looking for a book that gives everyone in your group something to talk about this is definitely one worth checking out! Oh, and it didn't hurt that the author teaches at the University of Arizona in Tucson and accepted an invitation to join us for our discussion. Way cool!”

“In April, we read I, Mona Lisa by Jeanne Kalogridis.  We were lucky enough to have an author chat with Ms. Kalogridis.  It was one of the best experiences our group has had in our 8 1/2 years together.  The book was rich with history so well written that none of us could put it down.  We recommend this book wholeheartedly!!!”

Kathy, Seekonk Book Discussion Group, Seekonk, MA

“This month we read Matrimony by Joshua Henkin. I think it was our best meeting ever! Mr. Henkin joined us at a local coffee shop to discuss his latest book. We have had quite a few author chats over the past year, but talking to the author in person brought the discussion to an entire new level. While I definitely liked the novel after I read it, I loved it after talking with Mr. Henkin!”

Julie, Preschool Moms Book Club, Mechanicsburg, PA

“Our group recently discussed The Next Thing On My List by Jill Smolinski.  The author joined us by speaker phone, and we had a fabulous conversation with her.  Each of our members brought "life lists" of 5 things they'd like to accomplish before their next big birthday.  It was really fun to see what each person put on their lists.  A really fun book lead to a really fun meeting!

Lisa, Cypress Readers Book Group, Cypress, CA

“We just finished Apples and Oranges by Marie Brenner which is about the difficult relationship between brothers and sisters, and I think after struggling through the Brenner's story - we all considered giving our own siblings a call - maybe some of us actually did...

“There is a study guide available to the book, and I highly recommend it as the reading is not easy. It tends to jump from past to present, and there are many, many digressions - but it works in the end and it is a very realistic piece. You know you are reading a true memoir. It is ugly and gritty, painful and truthful. We were reluctant to read a memoir after all of the recent issues that have come to light - why invest yourself in one only to find out it was fictionalized? That is not the issue here. It was interesting to find that the majority of our group pictured actor James Woods playing the part of Carl Brenner, the author's brother. In any case, this book is great for discussions regarding family dynamics as adults, psychology, differing personalities, grief management as well as helping others through illness. The list is endless and the discussions can be as well...Enjoy!”

"My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, was a great choice for our daughter/mother book club.   Who makes decisions in a family?  And who lives with the effects of those decisions?"

Denise, Red Balloons, Rockville, MD
