Talk about seaside reading -- reading on a boat is one of my favorite places to read. With the gentle sway of the boat, the halyards tinkling in the background, and the sun behind me on the bow, I could read my life away. Years ago, I read Annie Proulx's The Shipping News on a sailboat in the Caribbean and the contrast of my location and the book’s setting made the book even more amazing. I could feel the winters cold from the book on my sunburned back. In the July 2006 Library Journal, Barbara Hoffert wrote a great article titled, “The Book Club Exploded”. Hoffert states “The runaway popularity of books clubs has brought with it a whole new set of possibilities. Thematic discussion? A fiction/nonfiction mix? Video-conferencing? Multimedia exploration? With these and other approaches, librarians nationwide are structuring chitchat about beloved classic or recent bestsellers to deliver a richer and more vibrant experience for everyone.” For instance, “[a] good book, an avid group of readers, and an author on a speakerphone: that’s the perfect formula for an exciting book discussion …” continues Hoffert. Hoffert adds, “Buffed, blended, and hooked up to other media … the current book club looks nothing like yesterday modest tea party.” We’ve come a long way, baby! Reading Group Choices is excited to announce a new feature – Reading Groups’ Lively Selections. Every month we will pick one reading group and announce what they are discussing. This idea was suggested by a great number of members who will like to see what others are discussing around the nation and around the world.
