Whilst August yet wears her golden crown,
Ripening fields lush-bright with promise;
Summer waxes long, then wanes, quietly passing
Her fading green glory on to riotous Autumn.

I always loved the “riotous Autumn” when I was little – going back to school, wearing turtlenecks and jackets, watching the leaves change and being outside in the boisterous wind. Now, I have another great reason to enjoy the fall season. Reading Group Choices 2007 is at the press and is ready to be release on September 18! The selections of discussible books this year are fantastic. Fiction to nonfiction, serious to humorous, darkly engrossing to inspirational; the 13th edition of Reading Group Choices will engage lively book discussions for all types of reading groups.
Among the collection of Reading Group Choices 2007, there are reading group favorite authors like Geraldine Brooks, Kim Edwards, Mary Gaitskill, Sue Monk Kidd, Elizabeth Noble, and Mary McGarry Morris. Other bestselling authors in the 13th edition include Mitch Albom, Barbara Delinsky, Joan Didion, and Jane Hamilton. All have created new works guaranteed to generate lively discussions.
Some debut novels featured in the 13th edition are Cool Mind, Warm Heart by Steve Roberts, Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos, Broken Trail by Alan Geoffrion, The Fisherman’s Quilt by Margaret Doyle, and The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice. These works, too, are thought-provoking selections for reading groups.
Memoirs have recently become popular among many groups, and have we got some for you in this edition! Also, this year’s collection includes many tales from other countries that make us ponder our own cultural heritage and help us understand events unfolding around the world.
I’m thrilled about this edition of Reading Group Choices, and I hope your reading group will have insightful discussions with these selections.
Exciting news -- on August 26th, the Memphis Public Library is hosting a Book Club Conference with 220 book club members, and I will speak at the Luncheon! Dennis Lehane (Coronado, Mystic River) and Emily Giffin (Baby Proof) will also be speaking that day. THe library will host a number of seminars, including Problem Solving for Book Clubs and Speed Booking (similar to Speed Dating, but learning about discussible books.) I’m flattered to be included in bringing the Memphis community of book clubs and reading groups together.
Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh, NC, has also invited me for their Annual Book Club Bash on August 28 and August 30. The owner, Nancy Olson, and her staff always provide great discussible books ideas for the upcoming season. She also provides nice wine and cheese! I love getting out and speaking with you – the reading group and book club members. Please let me know if your store, library, or reading group is doing something special, and I see if I can come!
As always, thanks for keeping the joy of reading alive.
Barbara
